Is There Such a Thing As an Addiction To Fashion?

Fashion is a curious idea in itself, simply because it’s so subjective. But have you ever noticed that some people seem to get obsessed with the concept, to the point where their attitude is a detriment to their life?

Consider that from the perspectives of focusing on the parallels to drug treatment, the fashion relationship to body image, how Instagram can affect people, the presence of celebrities on platforms like Snapchat, and how fascinated people are with the idea of real-life runway stories (during Fashion Weeks for example).

Parallels To Drug Treatment

If someone becomes obsessed with fashion, and by association, appearance, they can exhibit symptoms similar to those that occur in drug addicts. Habits and behaviors suddenly take over a person’s life, and the consequences are life altering, and often negative. Basic self-esteem and confidence issues can rapidly spiral out of control. Both adults and children can fall prey to fashion issues, and financial trouble can result as well when people try to keep up with an unachievable goal of stylistic perfection all the time.

Relationship To Body Image

Fashion and body image go hand in hand. There’s been a tremendous amount of pressure on women specifically in the last few generations to become thinner (especially with the leading ladies on movies getting smaller and smaller), which has led to some real body image issues in young women. Clothes are made that only fit certain very small sizes, and that can affect all sorts of different aspects of people’s lives who don’t know the difference between someone else’s fantasy world, and their own realistic one.

The Instagram Phenomenon

Instagram has become a huge archival presence for the idea of fashion, but along with it, the addiction that some people have found to the likes and shares aspect of the platform have become something of a dark spot in modern culture. Being an Instagram model means looking very specific all the time, and that odd pressure has led to many models talking about severe depression at times.

Celebrities On Snapchat

Plenty of celebrities use Snapchat now, which means people now get a closer look into the real-life fashion choices that folks in the public eye go through on a daily basis. While it’s often fascinating, the resources that celebrities have are much different than the average finances that a normal person has, which can cause strange, addiction-like behavior in some people.

Real-Life Runway Stories

There are people who’ve gotten addicted to the real-life, reality-TV-style runway shows that occasionally are on the tube. Unfortunately, many of the people who absorb this kind of entertainment don’t know that even reality TV isn’t real, and that most of what they believe to be natural is in fact scripted.
