When a Handbag is a Tote

I was sitting with my friend Susan in a local restaurant just the other day. I hadn’t seen her for a couple of months, so it was great to be able to sit down and have a nice relaxing lunch and just basically catch up. I suppose most of you think when we girls get together all we talk about is fashion, TV shows, who is getting married, who is having babies and how our families are. Now I’m not saying that we don’t talk about those things, because we do, but we also like to speak about some of the issues of the day. Unfortunately, number one at the moment is what’s going on with refugees and terrorism.

And while the issues of the day are really important, don’t we get enough of those things on the TV every night and in our newspapers? But we did eventually get onto those girly topics and when you’re sitting in a restaurant sipping on a nice après lunch drink, you just can’t help noticing some of the people that are walking past the window out on the street. I don’t know whether it’s catty or picky but we do lower our standards at times and have a bit of a snicker at what some people will dare to wear out in public.

Susan’s not wealthy or a member of the glitterati in any way shape or form, but she does dress awfully nicely and has great fashion sense. Never will the day come when I see Susan in a pair of flip-flops and sweatpants! Mind you, we were at lunch, so putting on a bit of make-up and getting dressed nicely was the order of the day. We love our accessories don’t we? While it’s not a written law, it is certainly one of the standards that I live by and that is your shoes must match your handbag.

I did comment on Susan’s new bag, or tote, as she called it. It was a Saffiano style in a fuchsia colour and I must admit, it looked very elegant. There are some colours that you can match with fuchsia and Susan had complemented the bag with a pair of plain white high heeled shoes. We had a little discussion about handbags and I told her the story about a friend of mine who had picked up a Hermes bag in Hong Kong but had still paid, in my mind, an absolute fortune for it. When Susan told me that she had paid only £45 for the tote, I was more than impressed. I knew that Saffianos came in different styles and prices that matched. Hers was a good buy! I wasn’t about to go out and buy one, but I am telling you all this story in my blog so that you can make up your own minds.
